KENTUCKY STATE TOURNAMENT(S) 1934

Louisville, Ky.

"LEE AKERS WINS STATE SHOE TITLE 2D YEAR IN A ROW" Horseshoe tossers in the
Commonwealth of Kentucky must doff their hats to the Akers brothers, Lee and Frank, of Nolin.
Lee defended his title as Kentucky State horseshoe champion by beating his brother in the playoff
2 games to 1, Sunday afternoon at Central Park. Lee apparently had the championship sewed up,
having taken 10 out of 11 matches, with 2 to go but the champion bowed to both Nuttall and Allen
forcing the playoff. (Excerpt from the Louisville Courier Journal Sept. 24, 1934)

morning at 10 o’clock, and the high 16 will compete for the state title held by Lee Akers of Nolin, Ky.

All of the topnotchers from Lexington, Frankfort, Bardstown, and other nearby cities are expected to
enter. Frank Akers, brother of Lee, is expected to be a strong contender for the title. McCoy, who copped
the Falls Cities crown last Saturday and Sunday, Bill Nuttall, Sam Mattingly, Lucas, Allen and Hooper,
Louisville’s leading exponents of the art of peg ringing, have plenty of backers.

A large trophy will be presented to the winner, and the first 5 also will receive cash awards.
